Congressional Progressive Caucus Endorses The Progressive Agenda to Combat Income Inequality
Endorsement demonstrates continued momentum behind 15-point plan of bold, concrete policies to address America’s inequality crisis
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Signaling a united front on the issue of combatting income inequality, the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) voted to endorse The Progressive Agenda.
The CPC is the largest caucus within the House Democratic Caucus, and their endorsement of The Progressive Agenda shows a major coalescence among leaders in the progressive community.
In May, The Progressive Agenda outlined 15 progressive solutions for combatting income inequality – from a $15 minimum wage, to paid sick and paid family leave, to expanding Social Security, to progressive taxation.
In its endorsement, the CPC joins a growing coalition of current and former elected officials at every level of government, labor leaders, economists, civil rights champions, cultural luminaries, leaders of progressive organizations, and everyday Americans who stand united behind The Progressive Agenda.
The endorsement, which occurred during a videoconference meeting with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) this week, represents a major step towards addressing the economic needs of Americans across the country and making the policies in The Progressive Agenda a reality.
“The Congressional Progressive Caucus understands that income inequality is the crisis of our time, and that Americans are demanding real solutions from Washington,” said Mayor de Blasio. “I look forward to working with CPC members to advance policies that lift the floor for working people, support working families, and promote tax fairness by rewarding work, not wealth.”
“Too many working Americans run out of cash before they get to the end of the week,” said CPC Co-Chair Keith Ellison (D MN-05). “An economy that only works for the wealthy and huge corporations is a choice. The Progressive Agenda is a different choice—it’s a choice to ensure working Americans putting in long hours can make ends meet, to create opportunity in neighborhoods abandoned for too long, and to put people above profits. I’m proud to support Mayor de Blasio and The Progressive Agenda because it’s exactly what Americans around the country want.”
"The Progressive Agenda is a roadmap to the economic opportunities that have fallen out of reach for too many American families," said CPC Co-Chair Raúl Grijalva (D AZ-07). "In the richest nation on earth, a hard day's work should provide more than a never-ending struggle to make ends meet. The Progressive Agenda places people over profits, ensures families have the support they need to afford a sick day or start a family, and closes tax loopholes so every American contributes their fair share. I commend Mayor de Blasio on his leadership in assembling a truly impressive coalition calling for these common sense changes, and I'm proud to support the Progressive Agenda to Combat Income Inequality."
